Ongaku Overdrive proudly presents Virtua Ongaku 9, a LIVE concert stream you can see for free on our Twitch channel! Expect a fun night of video game music and other nerdy jams. We have enjoyed doing these shows and this one will be special, as your donations will benefit the Asian Pacific Fund’s Solidarity Fund. When you donate, not only will you help a great cause, but you will be entered into our prize raffle.

 

Musical Lineup

Mega Ran

Teacher, Rapper, Hero. Billboard Charter. Guinness World Record Holder. Mega Ran is all these things and more. Ran’s unique combination of fantasy and introspective hip-hop has found its way all over the world, into leading press outlets and most recently, into the Guinness Book Of World Records for having the most songs to reference a video game franchise.

                

The Megas

The Megas are a Los Angeles-based band best known for their synth rock anthems inspired by the Mega Man and Castlevania video game series. Ongaku Overdrive last has The Megas on Mega Mania in 2017 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Blue Bomber, and they have been putting out some tremendous music since!

                  

Super Smack

Described as “Outkast meets Lin-Manuel Miranda but Asian,” Super Smack is a high-energy, joy-driven rap musician, dancer, actor, and public speaker. One of the breakout nerdcore acts of 2019, Smack has performed at SXSW, MAGFest, Brooklyn Comic-Con, and co-headlined a 16-city national tour with LEX The Lexicon Artist.

In 2021, he’ll be releasing a special collaboration with Mega Ran for #StopAsianHate and #BlackLivesMatter, as well as his highly-anticipated “chill-tendo” EP, Neon Blue. Super Smack lives in New York City and performs all over the country.

              

Lauren the Flute

Lauren Liebowitz, aka Lauren the Flute, has been part of the VGM scene as a flutist and vocalist since 2010. She leads The Returners, an Austin-based video game cover band that has performed at PAX Prime, PAX South, MAGFest, and of course our Warriors of Light event. She also records solo covers and has contributed to numerous collaborative projects in the VGM community over the years. When not performing or recording music, Lauren the Flute spends her time baking cakes, telling stories, and streaming on Twitch. Lauren also holds an MFA in creative writing and has even published a few short stories.

                

AnimeVivi

Joe Chen is a wireless engineer and violist based out of San Antonio, TX. Classically trained, Joe has played in multiple orchestras over the past 20 years. He currently serves as principal violist of Symphony Viva. He also has releases covers of video game music and anime on YouTube, Spotify, and other platforms as “AnimeVivi.”

Prize Raffle

There will be a raffle around 11:15pm, after the final act. There will be six (6) drawings and each of those winners will be contacted by us. Prizes will include albums from the Bandcamps of the Virtua Ongaku 9 acts, some cool items from our prize stash, and more. For every $5 donated to the event, will be an entry into the raffle. So if someone donates $25, that will be FIVE raffle entries! These donations will benefit the Asian Pacific Fund.

About the Asian Pacific Fund

The Asian Pacific Fund is a community foundation whose mission is to strengthen the Asian and Pacific Islander community in the Bay Area by increasing philanthropy and supporting the organizations that serve our most vulnerable community members. Their Solidarity Fund will provide grants to organizations working to address the persistent anti-Asian racism, including supporting the physical and mental health of survivors, ensuring the safety of seniors, and advocating for racial justice across racial lines.
